January 16, 8pm, Fox Theatre, Redwood City
January 17, 8pm, Flint Center, Cupertino

7 November 2008 -- Los Altos, CA:  From the fiery passion of Flamenco dancing to the legendary Spanish maestro of the guitar, this palate of the culture of Spain is sure to keep audience members on the edge of their seats.  In continuation of its 60-year dedication to providing “Local and Live” music, the Peninsula Symphony concert features Carolina Lugo’s dance ensemble Brisas de España and legendary guitarist Angel Romero.  Pieces include de Falla’s Interlude and Dance from La Vida Breve and Three Cornered Hat Suite, Bizet’s Carmen Suite and Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.  Performances are on January 16 & 17 at 8pm at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City and the Flint Center in Cupertino.  Tickets are $34 General admission and $29 Senior/Student.

flamencoDuring the first half, the outstanding Flamenco dance company, Brisas de España, will dance to some of the most electrifying music that brings images of Spain to mind.  Perhaps the greatest of all Spanish composers, Manuel de Falla, is represented with two powerful works: the Interlude and Dance from “La Vida Breve,” and the Suite No. 2 from the Three Cornered Hat.  Bizet’s Carmen Suite and Chabrier’s España complete this exploration of the colors and rhythms of Spain.  Fusing the music with the dance that inspired it, brought to life by these magnificent Flamenco dancers in colorful costumes and brilliant choreography will be thrilling.

“Sizzling sounds of Spain will be center-stage on the Peninsula Symphony’s January programs.  The distinctively energetic rhythms and passionate colors of Spanish music are closely attached to Flamenco dance, and this connection drives the first half of the program,” raves Music Director & Conductor Mitchell Sardou Klein.

The second half of the program focuses on the national instrument of Spain, the guitar, as played by the greatest of Spanish guitarists, Angel Romero.  Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez is beloved by audiences and is perhaps the greatest guitar concerto in the repertoire.  Its driving rhythms and soaring lyricism make an indelible impression.

The Peninsula Symphony, a 90 member community orchestra led by music director and conductor Mitchell Sardou Klein, celebrates its 60th anniversary of providing unique and first-class music to the Bay Area community.  In addition, as part of its “Bridges to Music” outreach programs, the Symphony shares its passion for music by offering programs in schools, providing free or discounted tickets to students and their families, hosting two competitions for students, and presenting a free family concert and outdoor summer concert.  This season the Orchestra performs concerts in venues from Cupertino to San Mateo.  For tickets or more information visit www.peninsulasymphony.org or call (650) 941-5291.
