Peninsula Symphony invites you to:
A Holiday Celebration!

Nov. 20, Stanford Memorial Church, 8pm
Nov. 22, Stanford Memorial Church, 1:30pm

October 2009 -- Los Altos, CA:  The excitement of Peninsula Symphony’s 61st season of “Young Artists, Old Masters” continues as we celebrate the holiday season.  Pieces include selections from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, and a new performing edition of Reicha’s Requiem. (www.peninsulasymphony.org)  Performances are on October 20 at 8pm & 22 at 1:30pm at the Stanford Memorial Church.  Tickets are $20 General admission.

Bach’s magnificent Christmas Oratorio was written and first performed in 1634. It was written in six parts, one for each feast day of the Christmas period. The sections that we will be performing are mostly from the portion intended to be sung on Christmas day, and reflect the joy of that occasion, with texts that emphasize gladness, rejoicing and merriment. These sections are among the most colorful of all the movements of the oratorio, utilizing an orchestra including trumpets, oboe and oboe d’amore, flutes, bassoon, timpani, and strings; chorus; alto and bass vocal soloists.

Anton Reicha was a colleague of Beethoven’s, and though best known for his many celebrated woodwind quintets, composed many other excellent compositions. His Requiem is a superb work, requiring four vocal soloists, large chorus and symphony orchestra. This performance will utilize a new performing edition by Amy Goodman Weller, a Stanford Music Department alumna.
